Tyrosinase is the enzyme your skin uses to convert an amino acid into the pigment that becomes melanin. It’s the rate-limiting step, meaning blocking it genuinely slows new pigment production. But melanin that already exists in a spot doesn’t disappear the moment you block the enzyme making more of it. That existing pigment has to clear through skin’s own natural cell turnover, which takes time regardless of how effective the product is at stopping new production.
Why pushing harder can genuinely backfire
An overly aggressive approach to brightening actives tends to bring on residual inflammation, and inflammation itself can trigger a fresh cycle of pigmentation, sometimes more pronounced than what you started with. Dermatologists commonly recommend cycling these ingredients, roughly 3 to 4 months of use followed by 2 to 4 weeks off, rather than continuous use indefinitely. Most people never hear about this cycling approach and simply use a brightening product nonstop, which isn’t necessarily more effective and can increase irritation risk. The step that quietly determines whether any of this works
Melanin exists specifically to protect skin from UV damage. Blocking its production while still getting regular sun exposure means your skin keeps trying to produce the very thing you’re blocking, in direct response to UV hitting it. Without consistent, genuine sun protection alongside a brightening product, you’re working against your own skin’s protective response rather than with it, and new pigment can form as fast as the old spot fades.

Consistent use, realistic timelines measured in months rather than weeks, periodic breaks rather than continuous application, and strict sun protection running alongside it the entire time. None of that is as satisfying as a product promising to “erase” a spot, but it’s what the actual mechanism supports.
